Where once folks cringed at the thought of raw fish, now they crave it with Putnam County diners putting spicy salmon rolls and yellowtail scallion high on their list of “must haves.”
We asked – and you answered – giving us three of your favorite sushi restaurants. Grab your chopsticks and read below; each eatery is being profiled this week with the winner announced at the end of the month.
Toro, 1679 Route 6, Carmel, (845) 228-1700
What Makes It Good: The variety of options from Japanese sushi and sashimi to traditional Chinese dishes and Korean barbecue. The "wicked" drinks, especially the "Scorpion Bowl." Appetizers like spicy mussels, sweet potato tempura, and seafood pancake.
Diners Like: The rolls with funky names like Jeff, Matrix, Fire House, French Kiss, Big Mac and the pretty, heart-shaped Lovers. If you want something that isn't on the menu -- like Mapo Tofu -- a Sichuan dish made of tofu in spicy chili and red bean sauce -- they will make it for you, diners say.
Worth Special Mention: Beautiful Lake Gleneida sunsets. The chef has 25 years experience running some of the finest restaurants in Asia (Taipei Hyatt Hotel, a five-star restaurant) and in the United States (Panda West, Danbury, Conn.) and the sushi chef is a 10-year master sushi chef from Mannen Japanese restaurant in Ridgefield, Conn.
