HUNTINGDON - The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections has confirmed an employee was attacked Sunday by an inmate at the State Correctional Institution at Smithfield facility.
According to an official, an employee at the Huntingdon location sounded a personal alarm, which alerted additional staff who arrived and saw the inmate assaulting the employee.
The inmate was removed and placed in custody and the employee was taken to the hospital and has since been released.
The inmate was placed in disciplinary housing and has since been taken to a new correctional facility.
SCI-Smithfield went on lockdown due to the the assault and was on lockdown until Tuesday.
"This employee used their training and a safety device provided to all non-uniformed staff who have contact with inmates and corrections staff responded swiftly to the alarm and were able to halt the assault after it began," read a portion of a statement.
Officials said no other employees or inmates were involved and this was an isolated incident.
Pennsylvania State Police is investigating.
