The First Song From Spice Girls Sub-Group GEM Is Somehow Worse Than Anticipated

July 2024 · 2 minute read

20 years after releasing their iconic debut single "Wannabe," three-fifths of the Spice Girls — Geri Horner (Ginger), Emma Bunton (Baby) and Melanie B (Scary) — reunited in July to film a janky iPhone video celebrating their anniversary, while also vaguely threatening us with the idea of a Spice Girls 3-piece sub-unit, called GEM.

We giggled at the ridiculous prospect: the idea of three members of one of the most iconic five-piece girl groups in modern history recording even one song without Victoria Beckham (Posh) and, even more vocally crucial, Melanie C (Sporty) was a ludicrous proposition from the start. (Yes, Forever is still great, but Geri is back now.)

As of today (Nov. 22), a GEM demo has surfaced in full (along with a full album's worth of Geri Horner country-tinged demos, which...let's not right now), and the 3-piece Spice Girls project is no longer hypothetical.

"Song For Her" is the first and, God willing, the last taste of GEM music to come.

The tired-sounding track sounds sort of like a 2011 self-empowerment anthem in MIDI form, including the phrase "she's got that boom-boom-pop." It is an utter betrayal of our trust. We should reject this now before it becomes too late and the Spice Girls legacy is tarnished any further.

"You know, us girls love creating stuff. We went and had a laugh in the studio. It’s not a single, it’s just we were creating. It’s just a demo and somehow it has got out there," Emma said of the track back when the song's title first surfaced in July. In the words of Stan Twitter: keep it.

Geri, stop it. Mel B, stop it. Emma, you actually sound pretty nice on this, but stop it...and then record a follow-up to Life In Mono.

Don't you Girls remember your own reunion tour mantra?

"The power of three, not meant to be. The power of four needs one girl more. The power of five keeps love alive."

Is nothing sacred anymore in 2016?
