The National Weather Service had warned of a severe thunderstorm watch from Washington DC to the northern border of Connecticut around noon and lasting through 8 p.m.

By 8:30 p.m., the West Whiteland Fire Company said that it had made 16 water rescues to pull more than 30 people from their vehicles that had been caught in the flood.

"We cannot stress enough do not drive through flooded roadways," the Company said. "Heavy downpours caused flash flooding in the township. Happily, there were no injuries to report."

By nearly 11 p.m., West Chester police said that Route 322/Downingtown Pike in East Bradford Township was closed from  Sugars Bridge Road and Valley Creek Road, as PennDOT crews investigated a flood-damaged bridge.

The route remained closed as of midday Wednesday, July 26.

At least one person was rescued from flood waters in East Bradford by West Chester firefighters, police added.

More storms could be on the way, according to the National Weather Service. Severe thunderstorms are possible during the afternoon and evening on Thursday, July 27.
