If the song “Sittin’ Sidewayz” rings a bell, you should know it was made by Paul Wall, that is, if you didn’t already know that. The rapper has been in the game for a long time with chart-topping albums that complement his impressive career. He was associated with Chamillionaire. Here are more interesting details about him.
the biography
Paul Wall whose real name is Paul Michael Slayton was born on March 11, 1981 in Houston, Texas. He was a student at Jersey Village High School. He then studied mass communication at the University of Houston for three years. But this course he was studying had mainly to do with mass language having little to do with what he was most passionate about, which was music. After much thought, he decided to quit college to pursue his dreams. Early in his career, Paul Wall formed a band with his Skinhead friends Rob (Transplants) and Travis Barker. The group was called “Exquisite Taste”, but it is now defunct.
After the band’s death, he offered to do promotions for Michael “5000” Watts’ company, Swishahouse. It was around the same time he met Chamillionaire. He and Chamillionaire went to Watts’ studio, KBXX, to convince him to let them appear on his show by knocking. They suggested doing some verses on one of his mixtapes, titled Choppin Em Up Part 2. It was a song that was released to rave reviews in 1992.
Luckily, they were able to win Watts over and luckily for them, freestyle became hugely popular on the streets, resulting in Paul Wall and Chamillionaire becoming staples on the Houston mixtape circuit. They became permanent members of Swishahouse and featured in a number of Watts’ mixtapes.
New group
Following the exit of fellow party label Swishahouse, Paul and Chamillionaire also left the label and started their own band ‘The Color Changin’ Click’. It was in this group that they released songs intended for the promotion of labels like Cash Money, Def Jam Records and No Limit Records.
However, this group was disbanded by the duo in 2005 citing creative differences. While Chamillionaire released records independently, Paul Wall returned to the Swishahouse label. This would later prove to be a good move for Paul as it allowed him for the first time to be featured on Mike Jones’ first commercially distributed single, Encore tippin’, from his major debut album, Who Is Mike Jones?.
Paul Wall released his debut album, The PeoplesChamp, in 2005 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Sittin’ Sidewayz was his first single featuring Big Pokey. The second single, They not’w know, features UGK’s Bun B and the video version features Mike Jones. The third single “Girl” received radio airplay and peaked at number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Passionate about cinema, he made his film debut in 2006 Furniture. He would also have a role in movies like Hope They Serve Beer In Hell among a few other movies.
His second album Get Money, Stay True, was released in 2007, and peaked at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. On this album, singles such as I’m Throwed featuring and produced by Jermaine Dupri as well as Break ‘Em Off featuring Lil Keke. In the same year, he was featured on the debut album of the same name by reggae artist Collie Buddz. He also appeared alongside celebrities in Nickle Back’s music video, ‘Rockstar’.
