SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — A staff member at a Salt Lake City middle school was arrested Tuesday after police said she was having sexual relations with a 14-year-old student and became pregnant with his child.
The student was also allegedly threatened by members of a gang, of which the woman was reportedly a member.
According to a statement issued by the Granite School District on Wednesday, Kimberly Jeniffer Cruz-Romero, who worked as an attendance tracker at Granite Park Junior High, was "terminated as a result of these charges."
As stated in a police affidavit of probable cause, 29-year-old Cruz-Romero is facing one first degree felony count of rape of a child, one first degree felony count of forcible sodomy, two third degree felony counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor and one infraction.Along with holding a position of trust within the Granite school system, KUTVhas confirmed that Cruz-Romero had formerly worked as a prisoner funds clerk for several months at the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office, a position which helps to administer bail money.
Authorities said that an investigation into this case began Dec. 16 when the victim reported to a Granite School District police officer that he and one of the school's attendance trackers had been having sexual relations. According to police records, the victim divulged that he and Cruz-Romero had been intimate on several occasions, including at or around a Salt Lake City hotel, in her car, in her office at the school and once prior to the victim turning 14.
Granite School District officers reported that they found images and video footage of the victim and Cruz-Romero engaging in sexual relations as well as a text message which supported allegations that Cruz-Romero had become pregnant with the victim's child. When the victim wanted to end his relationship with Cruz-Romero, Granite School District police said he reported being threated by members of a gang that Cruz-Romero was a part of.
Law enforcement booked Cruz-Romero into the Salt Lake County Jail on December 27 on the charges previously listed.
Ben Horsley, a spokesperson for the Granite School District provided 2News with the following statement on the matter:
Granite School District was recently notified regarding some disturbing information from the Granite Police Department, wherein a part-time hourly employee (attendance tracker), Kimberly Cruz Romero, was arrested on some very serious charges involving an inappropriate relationship with a student at Granite Park Junior High. We are still gathering information on this matter, but Romero has been terminated as a result of these charges. Romero has only been employed with the district and Granite Park since the start of this current school year. Student safety is our primary concern, and we take these charges very seriously. There is no indication from Granite Police that any other students were involved.
According to Horsley, Cruz-Romero passed that state-required Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) nationwide background check as part of her application process with the school district back in August.
After hearing of the allegations placed upon her, Horsley reported that representatives of the school district attempted to place Cruz-Romero on leave, though they were not successful until after they had collected sufficient evidence of the crimes she had committed.
As of Wednesday afternoon, KUTV was investigating separate claims against Cruz-Romero dating back to 2014, though nothing has been confirmed.
