JUNEAU, Alaska (TND) — A cruise ship worker was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) after he attacked three people with a pair of medical scissors aboard the vessel, according to a prosecutor.
The U.S. attorney's office on Tuesday identified the man as 35-year-old Ntando Sogoni, 35, of South Africa.
A news release noted he was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon within maritime and territorial jurisdiction.
According to an affidavit from FBI Special Agent Matthew Judy, Sogoni was recently hired by a cruise line and joined the ship, the Norwegian Encore, in Seattle on Sunday. The ship set off that day for a weeklong trip with scheduled stops in Alaska ports, including the capital of Juneau, and British Columbia.
The release noted Sogoni was working on the cruise ship when other ship employees saw him trying to deploy a lifeboat. Security guards escorted him to the ship’s medical center for an assessment.
None of the injuries were considered life-threatening.
The alleged incident happened west of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, as the ship was sailing to Alaska.
The ship arrived in Juneau on Tuesday, when he was arrested by the FBI, the U.S. attorney's office said.
Sogoni was detained and held in the ship’s jail ahead of his arrest, according to the release. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count.
