Lawrence Gene David, a New Yorker, was born on 2. July 1947. He is the second son of Jewish parents Morty David and Rose David. Also raised in New York, David attended Sheepshead Bay High School and later the University of Maryland, where he studied history and then business administration. Shortly after graduating from college, he joined the US Army Reserve.

Larry David started his showbiz career in the early 1970s as a stand-up comedian in nightclubs across New York. However, he supplemented his stand-up career with various other jobs such as a salesman, taxi driver, TV repairman and paralegal.
