Izzie Stevens and Alex Karev are getting their long-awaited reunion! Several original Grey’s Anatomy cast members will be reuniting on stage at the 2024 Emmys, including the fan-favorite couple. Keep reading for all the details on the Grey’s Anatomy reunion.
ABC’s long-running medical drama focuses on the lives of surgical interns, residents and attendings at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in Seattle, Washington. Created by Shonda Rhimes, the show debuted in 2005 and spawned two spinoff series: Private Practice and Station 19. Grey’s Anatomy‘s original cast featured Ellen Pompeo, Sandra Oh, Justin Chambers, Katherine Heigl and T.R. Knight as first-year residents, as well as James Pickens Jr. as Dr. Richard Webber, Patrick Dempsey as Dr. Derek Shepherd, Isaiah Washington as Dr. Preston Burke and Chandra Wilson as Dr. Miranda Bailey.
Over the years, countless cast members have come and gone on the series and their departures are still being mourned by fans. Pompeo, who starred as protagonist Dr. Meredith Grey, left the show last year but will appear in the upcoming Season 20 in a limited capacity. The only original cast members left on the series are Wilson and Pickens Jr.
There are two actors, in particular, that fans want to see return to the show: Heigl and Chambers, who starred as Dr. Izzie Stevens and Dr. Alex Karev, respectively. Izzie and Karev had an on-screen relationship that was revered by fans; their wedding day is one of the most emotional scenes in the show’s history, as is Izzie nearly dying in Karev’s arms. Heigl left the show during Season 6, thus leading to an abrupt and devastating end for Izzie and Karev’s relationship. Meanwhile, Chambers left in Season 16; his character reconnecting with Izzie off-screen after learning that he had fathered her twins.
Although the actors don’t have plans to return to Grey’s Anatomy just yet, the 2024 Emmys are providing us with the next best thing — a reunion between Chambers and Heigl. The actors are set to take the stage together at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Anthony Anderson. They will be joined by Pompeo, Wilson and Pickens Jr. to present an awards category together.
In addition to Grey’s Anatomy, the ceremony will reunite cast members from several other iconic TV shows, including The Sopranos, Martin, Ally McBeal, Saturday Night Live, American Horror Story: Murder House and Cheers. The Emmys will also pay homage to I Love Lucy with a live reenactment of the classic conveyor belt scene.
You can watch the Izzie and Karev reunion live on Fox; the ceremony kicks off at 8 p.m. EST.
