TL;DR:

A famous producer worked on Lady Gaga‘s first song to hit No. 1. The lyrics include a reference to the producer. Subsequently, some fans misinterpreted the lyric.

A producer worked with an unknown Lady Gaga even though he said he only wanted to work with established artists

RedOne is a producer who worked with Gaga many times. During a 2018 interview with Entertainment Weekly, RedOne discussed meeting the singer for the first time. “At that time, I just did my first hit with Kat DeLuna called ‘Whine Up,'” he recalled. “After that hit, I told my management that I wanted to work with established artists.

“But they called me and said, ‘Hey, we [want you to work with] this girl. She’s talented if you want to meet her for five minutes,'” RedOne continued. “I met her outside of the Sony building in New York, and I liked the vibe I was getting! She was like, ‘Oh my God, I love ‘Whine Up!'”

RedOne and Gaga created the song “Just Dance” together. RedOne wanted the song to sound like a rock tune made with synthesizers instead of guitars. Gaga finished her debut album in about 30 days.

Lady Gaga briefly sings RedOne’s name in the song

RedOne said Gaga came up with the lyrics of “Just Dance” very quickly. At the beginning of “Just Dance,” Gaga says RedOne’s name. “People always tell me, ‘Oh my God, I thought she was saying red wine!'” RedOne said. “This is the story of my life, that the world thinks she’s saying ‘red wine!’

“Especially because Gaga sings, ‘I’ve had a little bit too much’ at the start,” he said. “People think she’s talking about alcohol! Like she had a little bit too much red wine. I’m still happy that we made history, so I don’t care!”

How Lady Gaga’s ‘Just Dance’ and its parent album performed on the charts in the United States

“Just Dance” became Gaga’s first No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100. It topped the chart for three of its 49 weeks on the chart. None of Gaga’s subsequent songs lasted as long on the Billboard Hot 100.

Gaga released “Just Dance” on the album The Fame. The album reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200, staying on the chart for 265 weeks. The Fame includes other hit songs such as “Poker Face,” “Paparazzi,” and “LoveGame.”

“Just Dance” was a massive hit even if people misheard some of its lyrics.
