Westmoreland County, PA — Authorities in Westmoreland County are providing an update on the investigation into the fatal officer-involved shooting from earlier this month.
On Friday, Westmoreland County District Attorney Nicole Ziccarelli ruled that the officers involved in the July 2nd shooting were justified in killing 59-year-old Robbie Saunders.
Investigators say on the afternoon of Sunday, July 2nd, officers were called to a home along Gravel Hill Road, in Ligonier Township, for a report of a disturbance.
Police say the caller reported that Saunders was allegedly threatening to kill a woman inside the home.
Authorities say when officers arrived on scene, they found Saunders "aggressively" wielding a 14-inch machete.
Police say the officers gave verbal commands for Saunders to lower his weapon, but he did not comply, resulting in an officers firing one fatal shot.
DA Ziccarelli stated that a review of the officers' body camera footage, as well as eyewitness reports, helped determine that they were justified in using deadly force.
