Columbus police cruiser dash camera video shows Amazon shooter firing at officers

September 2024 · 3 minute read

A Columbus police officer's cruiser dash camera captured the moments police caught up with a suspect accused of opening fire in an Amazon facility and taking off.

The video shows police boxing in the suspect's car. The suspect gets out of the driver's seat and starts firing at officers. The footage then shows officers firing back, hitting the suspect. One Columbus police officer was also shot during the exchange.

The shooting is connected to a case in West Jefferson involving the suspect, 22-year-old Ali Hamsa Yusuf.

The West Jefferson Police Chief says Yusuf fired shots inside an Amazon facility in West Jefferson Sunday evening.

Amazon's surveillance cameras captured Yusuf three feet away from a contracted security guard, with his gun pointed toward the security guard's head.

"He shot at me twice, but he missed," said the security guard to 911 dispatchers. "He almost executed me."

"It appeared that he had a jam, was checking the top rail of the gun, and then ultimately fired the round. It just missed the victim's head," said Brandon Smith, West Jefferson's Police Chief.

Smith said Yusuf took off without injuring anyone at the Amazon facility.

The 911 caller identified the suspect to police, according to Chief Smith. He said Yusuf was also a contracted security guard at the facility, and the 911 caller told police he had been training him for the past few weeks.

A Madison County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy said undercover detectives tracked Yusuf to an apartment complex and found him parked outside. He drove away, and the chief deputy said the undercover detectives followed him.

Columbus police were called to assist.

The Columbus police cruiser dash camera video starts when officers stop Yusuf in his car in west Columbus on Georgesville Road. It then shows the shootout between police and Yusuf.

It ends when an officer yells, "I'm hit."

"That was hard to watch," said Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant. "I just want to applaud each of the responding officers for their bravery and dedication to preserving the safety of our residents and our citizens."

Chief Bryant said Yusuf died shortly after the shooting at a hospital.

A fellow Columbus police officer rushed the officer who was shot to Grant Medical Center. The officer was released. Bryant said he's a four year veteran with the department.

Bryant showed a picture of where the round hit the officer's bulletproof vest.

"That vest took that round, and so were very grateful that he’s here with us today."

This shooting came less than 24 hours after body camera footage showed Columbus police officers being fired at in east Columbus. The suspect in that shooting died.

Columbus police said the suspect shot and killed a woman before they arrived at the scene and fired back at him.

"This weekend, we are all reminded of the dangers our law enforcement officers face every day as they put their uniforms on and come to work," said Chief Bryant. "But we will state this again. We will not tolerate people firing at officers, and we will respond."
